STRONGBOW DJ COMPETITION

Who saw this coming? Strongbow organising a competition for DJs?? WOW... I definitely didn't see this coming. This is amazing though. For the next couple of months Strongbow will be searching for and showcasing the hottest SA talent right on your doorstep. Not only is Strongbow bringing these bold events to your city, but it is also helping new DJs fast track their music careers by putting them in the limelight.

We got word that Wannabe DJs are invited to enter the Strongbow DJ competition bu sending through an original mix which will be entered into a radio DJ battle in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. The battle will take place on the regional radio stations, to find the ultimate DJs in the three regions.

These finalists will then be paired off and will battle it out head on at two separate Strongbow Do You Know events. The ultimate winner of the battle will walk away with the street cred of having played alongside some of SA's own DJ heavy weights, as well as R 5 000.00 in cash. All interested DJs are requested to listen to GoodhopeFM, Ukhozi FM and Yfm for more details.

Fw: The earth-scraper vs sky-scraper

Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device

... the earth-scraper: Architects design 65-storey building which plunges 300 metres below ground

By Hugo Gye

Architects have designed an incredible 65-storey 'earth-scraper' which plunges 300 metres below ground.

The stunning upside down pyramid in the middle of Mexico City is designed to get around height limits on new buildings in the capital.

The subterranean building will have 10 storeys each for homes, shops and a museum, as well as 35 storeys for offices.

Deep: The 65-storey 'earth-scraper' is set to plunge 300m into the ground beneath Mexico City

Epic scale: The enormous complex is intended to get round the city's planning laws, which state that buildings can be no more than eight storeys high

Landmark: The earth-scraper would be located in the city's main square, and topped with an enormous Mexican flag

A glass floor covers the massive 240m x 240m hole in the city's main square to filter in natural light from the world above.

The design has been crowned with a Mexican flag.

Esteban Suarez, from architecture firm BNKR Arquitectura, said the building would also house a new cultural centre.

Scary: The core is all made of glass to ensure that all parts of the building receive natural sunlight from the world outside

Relaxing: Designers expect the public areas of the building to become a popular destination for those wishing to escape the bustle of the city

Heritage: The earth-scraper is expected to contain a museum and cultural centre which will explore the history of Mexico and its pyramids

He said: 'New infrastructure, office, retail and living space are required in the city but no empty plots are available.

'Federal and local laws prohibit demolishing historic buildings and even if this was so, height regulations limit new structures to eight storeys.

'The city's historic centre is in desperate need of a makeover but we have nowhere to put it, this means the only way to go is down.'

He added: 'The Earthscraper preserves the iconic presence of the city square and the existing hierarchy of the buildings that surround it.

'It is an inverted pyramid with a central void to allow all habitable spaces to enjoy natural lighting and ventilation.

'It will also allow the numerous activities that take place on the city square year round such as concerts, open-air exhibitions and military parades to go ahead.'

Unobtrusive: One advantage of the unusual structure is that it would create space in the centre of Mexico City, which is full of historic buildings which cannot be demolished

Green: The interior of the building is supposed to look natural and welcoming

Efficient: The creative use of space would allow the plaza to be used for events such as concerts and military parades

Massive: The space covering the earth-scraper will take up 240 square metres in the heart of Mexico's capital

Pyramids play a large part in the architectural history of Mexico, as the country's anicent civilisations have often build huge pyramid structures.

When the Aztecs first came into the Valley of Mexico they built their pyramids on the lake they found there.

As the Aztec Empire grew in size and power they conceived a new and bigger pyramid, but instead of looking for a new site they just built it on and around the existing one.

The traditional pyramids are therefore composed of different layers of historical periods.

Modern: Much of the building is expected to be devoted to office space

Shopping: The earth-scraper would almost certainly become one of the city's top retail destinations as soon as it opened

Connected: This picture shows the proposed metro station which would pass through the earth-scraper just below ground level

When the Spanish arrived in America and ultimately conquered the Aztecs, they erected Christian churches on top of the pyramids.

Eventually their whole colonial city was built over the Aztec one. In the 20th century, many colonial buildings were demolished and modern structures raised on the existing historic foundations.

Esteban added: 'The Earthscraper digs down through the layers of cities to uncover our roots.'

Novelty: No other public building extends so far beneath the ground

Technical: The building would be an extraordinary feat of engineering

Today: The plaza, shown as it looks currently, would be transformed by the radical plan

Two Iranian football players given the red card... after 'inappropriate' buttock squeezing goal celebration

Iran's football federation has suspended two players for the ‘inappropriate’ goal celebration of buttock squeezing.

Mohammad Nosrati appeared to briefly put his hand on Sheys Rezaei as players of the team Persepolis huddled together to celebrate a goal against Damash Gilan in a televised match on Saturday.

The pair were also reportedly fined almost £25,000 each and their actions might have caused little comment in the West where fans are used to ‘laddish’ behaviour by football stars, but it caused outrage in the Islamic republic.

Jalal Yahyazadeh, a cleric and member of parliament, called it a ‘shameless act’ and added that it had ‘upset, angered and outraged’ all sports fans. [DailyMail]

Fikile Mbalula's Drama

"I used a condom but it burst" - Mbalula fury over pregnant mistress

MINISTER of Sports and Recreation Fikile Mbalula’s ghosts are crawling out of their graves to haunt him.

Mbalula’s vivacious ex-girlfriend Joyce Molamu claims to be pregnant with his child after a steamy sexual encounter on the day they met.

Mbalula allegedly fell head-over-heels in love with the sprightly Molamu at a shindig hosted by a friend in Saxonworld, northern Joburg.

The love-struck Molamu apparently invited Mbalula to her house, where they bonked like rabbits on steroids.

Mbalula then jetted off to New Zealand to watch the Springboks play in a Rugby World Cup showpiece.

All hell broke loose when Molamu, who has a five-month-old child, informed Mbalula on his return that she didn’t buy the morning-after pill and that she was pregnant with his child.

She declines to comment, saying: “I’ve been advised by my lawyers not to comment on the matter.”

Jam Alley is undergoing serious reloading after 18 years of jammin’…

Johannesburg, Wednesday 04 May, 2011, Winds of change have been sweeping over at the popular youth show, Jam Alley, which is this year celebrating 18 years on national television. Like several shows on SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho, Jam Alley, has also received its own prescription of a Reloaded dose.

The show is in for major revamp and maybe an engine overhaul as well. The main change will see the current presenters making way for fresh talent to take the show forward. The irrepressible Twasa Seoke and T’do will soon bid the show and Mzansi’s viewers a final goodbye as the show’s presenters to pursue other things. Twasa has been with the show for 8 years.

The show’s producers have already started with the process of unearthing suitable talent to drive the popular Friday evening youth show. The new revamped show which promises to be bigger and more exciting will be launched on television on Friday 20 May 2011, at 18:30.

This is what the Channel’s Publicity Manager had to say when quizzed about the pending changes on the show, “The changes will not come as a complete surprise to our viewers who have been calling for change for some time so that the channel remains relevant in meeting their genuine expectations.”

“The Reloaded Campaign is meant to reward their unwavering loyalty to the brand and to provide them with an improved viewing experience they can only expect from SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho,” she adds.

The show is currently celebrating an 18-year experience on national television under the theme – 18 Years of Jammin’ – and 8 episodes have already been recorded with a selection of Mzansi’s celebs roped in as contestants and presenters. Amongst others the following personalities have already featured on the show: S’phiwe Mtshali (ex-presenter on the show), Zizo Beda, The Twinz and Phila Mazibuko, Zone 14 and City Sesla cast. Contestants included Judith Sephuma, Mzambiya, Mandoza, Slikuor and Proverb.

Osama bin Laden house 'worth far less than US claimed'

Osama bin Laden's house, described by the US government as a $1m (£605,000) mansion, is in fact worth no than $250,000 say property professionals in Abbottabad, the town where he was killed.

The revelation is the latest of several erroneous descriptions about the nature of Bin Laden's hideout – and the manner of his death – which have dogged the White House in recent days.

News24 launches isiZulu site

News24 - South Africa's largest digital news brand - has launched a Zulu language news site that will sit alongside the English and Afrikaans platforms. Found at http://isizulu.news24.com/, the site covers all major areas including news, sport and business with future developments planned for multimedia and user-generated content. The motivation behind an isiZulu News24 site was the huge success of Nuus24, which was launched in 2009. The public's demand for online news in their home language was obvious and it was decided to look at a product for isiZulu speakers.

24.com's GM, Geoff Cohen says, "Our ambition is to reach as many people in Africa as possible with technology, content and community that informs, entertains and connects. To do that effectively and at scale we have to be able to publish in multiple languages. isiZulu.News24.com is the first step towards this, with more languages from across the African continent to follow."

The site has the same functionality and social layers currently found on News24 and Nuus24 as well as a mobile platform, which can be found at http://m.news24.com/isiZulu/. "Given the mobile penetration in South Africa, we see mobile as one of the key drivers for this product," says Jannie Momberg, News24 Editor. "Going forward mobile will probably become the dominant platform for isiZulu.news24.com," he adds.

The content on isiZulu.News24.com is partially translated from News24 and partially aggregated from the news wires and contextualized internet sources.

Initially the public can expect the site to be updated during working hours, Monday to Friday.

Pic of the day!

Benny McCarthy is now +/- R16 Million richer!

Benni McCarthy is a free agent after agreeing a £1.5-million (R16-million) pay-off from English Premiership West Ham United to buy him out of the remainder of his contract.

The former Bafana Bafana striker will now be free to join any team of his choosing with no transfer fee required, opening up his options.

McCarthy failed to score a single goal for West Ham in the 14 appearances he made for the club following his move from Blackburn Rovers in January 2010.

By opting out of his contract early, he has given up an additional £800 000 (R8.8-million) in wages that would have been due to him had he opted to see out the full term of the deal, which expired in June 2012.

The 33-year-old was not registered to play in the English Premiership for the second half of the season and so has not seen action for The Hammers since January.

His much talked about weight problems have cost him around £200 000 (R2.2-million) in wages, though by all accounts he is now at the required fitness levels.

Finding a new name for Bafana Bafana continues

In response to the Stanton Woodrush statement on the Bafana Bafana trademark saga, the president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Kirsten Nematandani, has reconfirmed that the association has appointed a three-member committee comprising the president, VP Danny Jordaan and Alpha Mchunu to look at changing the team's nickname.
"We look forward to engaging the nation in finding a new name. However, with respect to the current name, we will also look at any reasonable proposals from anyone, but the committee will continue with its work as mandated by the SAFA National Executive Committee on 5 February 2011," said Nematandani.

"The Association has directed a letter to all interested parties and we await a response to our communiqué to them in this regard. It is in the interest of SAFA to ensure that it receives an income from the exploitation of the trademark and we would not want to delay this process any further."
